Prince Harry had a secret hotmail account

Prince Harry is just like the rest of us when it comes to having an old, embarrassing email address.

The 40-year-old Duke is known to have used a number of different aliases to hide his identity when he was younger. And that included one of three email addresses he used around 2014.

According to The Telegraph, Harry has an account under the name 'spikewales@hotmail.com'. The Prince opened up about his unusual nickname in his tell-all memoir Spare, and revealed just how it came about.

According to Harry, the nickname stuck when he was pictured back in 2003 with an echidna, which was also named Spike, during his gap year in Australia. A friend of Harry's noticed a resemblance between the animal and the prince's spiky hairstyle at the time.

As the outlet The Daily Beast stated: "He's apparently just like the rest of us lowly commoners when it comes to creating amusing email addresses in his younger years which, in hindsight, are a bit cringeworthy." It seems the nickname really stuck.

According to reports, Harry's close friends and protection officers used to call the Prince 'Spike' – and it was the name Harry used as a pseudonym for his secret Facebook account. The prince is said to have used the secret account, under the name Spike Wells, to communicate with then-girlfriend Chelsy Davy when he was stationed with the Army in Afghanistan.

However, he had to delete the profile in 2012 after the furore around his Las Vegas photographs provoked Palace security concerns. It's not just Prince Harry who has assumed an alias to avoid being recognised in the past, it seems.

According to Hello!, when Prince William enrolled at St Andrews university he unofficially went by the name 'Steve'. While all the Prince's official documents had his real name, William Wales, on them, friends of the future monarch referred to him as Steve when talking about him in public, in order to help him stay under the radar.

And just recently the future King admitted he uses a fake name to post on football forums. During a visit to Birmingham, the football-loving Prince of Wales made time to join Villa fans at a Wetherspoons pub inside New Street station, where he even bought a round of drinks.

While discussing the ins and outs of the squad with fellow supporters, William disclosed he has a secret online presence on Aston Villa forums in order to keep in touch with grassroots opinions.

Steve Jones, a fan who shared a drink with the Prince, told The Athletic : "He said he keeps abreast of Villa gossip because he is on all the fans' forums. He goes under different names and he posts on there because that's how he gets the feeling of what's going on and what's the opinion."
