One fan replied: "can't get over this dress and her hairstyle," while another said: "My fav couple ever !!! My husband and I have been together for 40 years and we still look at each other the way they do !!!"

That same day, they gave an interview to journalist and friend Tom Bradby in which William described proposing: "It was about three weeks ago on holiday in Kenya.

"We had a little private time away together with some friends and I just decided that it was the right time really.

"We had been talking about marriage for a while so it wasn't a massively big surprise. I took her up somewhere nice in Kenya and I proposed."

"It was very romantic," Kate added. "We were out with friends and things so I really didn't expect it all. I thought he might have maybe thought about it, but no. It was a total shock when it came, and very excited."

Robert Jobson described the moment William proposed in his book, Catherine: A Biography: "The proposal finally came during a holiday in Kenya. Lake Alice, a hidden gem nestled five miles from the equator and elevated at 11,500 feet, was a sight to behold.

"Its turquoise waters shimmered against the lush green hills, while the snowy peak of Mount Kenya loomed in the distance.

"It was a paradise untouched by the hustle and bustle of civilization, a place where only a select few with the deep pockets to reach it have had the privilege to witness its astounding beauty.

"For William, the romantic adventurer, it was the perfect setting to ask his beloved Catherine for her hand in marriage."
