Released in 1993, The Wedding Banquet is a romantic comedy about a gay man who fakes a marriage to appease his parents. The remake, set to release next year, follows a man who asks his friend (Kelly) to marry him to get a green card. In exchange, he offers to fund IVF treatments so she and her girlfriend (Lily Gladstone) can have a baby.

"I haven’t said this publicly yet, but I’m a queer person,” Kelly told Vanity Fair, reportedly getting emotional.

Kelly said her identity as a queer person is also why she was initially attracted to the role. "The thing that really excited me about it was I got to play a person that I felt like I knew," she shared. "I don't feel like I'm acting at all in this movie."

She added, "I’m here doing this amazing movie with these amazing people. I’ve never been in a queer space before. I’ve never truly felt this accepted before."

According to Vanity Fair, Kelly teared up as she went on. "I haven’t done this in a while," she said. "I’m getting freaking emotional over here.”

People were so happy for her! And celebrated her online.

Taking to Reddit, one fan wrote, "I am glad for Kelly...she deserves to be happy."

"I’m genuinely happy for Kelly," another said. "She truly deserves all the joy and happiness life has to offer."

"Be who you are," a third fan wrote while someone else called her, "So. Very. Brave."

Kelly has also advocated for LGBTQ+ characters in Hollywood before. In fact, she even said she thinks there were "some romantic feelings going on" between Raya and her enemy Namaari in Raya and the Last Dragon.

"I think if you’re a person watching this movie and you see representation in a way that feels really real and authentic to you, then it is real and authentic," she added to Vanity Fair while discussing speculation that Raya might be queer. "I think it might get me in trouble for saying that, but whatever."
