Red Sox Predicted To Acquire $52 Million Gold Glover In Blockbuster Trade

The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly aggressively shopping third baseman Nolan Arenado. Arenado has $52 million left on his contract and the Cardinals are desperately trying to get off as much money as possible while bringing in a few talented prospects to help with their upcoming rebuild.

Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer recently suggested the Boston Red Sox could be the favorites to land Arenado in a blockbuster trade. Rymer even put together a hypothetical package that could make sense for both sides.

Here's the deal pitched by Rymer which would send Arenado to the Red Sox:

  • Boston Red Sox receive: 3B Nolan Arenado, Cash
  • St. Louis Cardinals receive: 2B Vaughn Grissom, INF Mikey Romero (No. 12 prospect)

"Lest anyone think of this as Rafael Devers erasure, it's frankly past time for Boston to move him across the diamond to first base," Rymer wrote. "If the team doesn't agree, well, perhaps Arenado is serious about playing the cold corner for a new team. What's for sure is that his stroke is perfect for Fenway Park. Right-handed pull power is his whole thing, and Statcast's Park Factors back up the Green Monster's reputation for aiding such hitters.

"Even after the Garrett Crochet trade, the Red Sox remain loaded with young position players. That can only help if they pursue Arenado, as St. Louis' rejection of Stroman indicates that a bad contract swap involving, say, Masataka Yoshida is not happening."

Arenado would head to Boston to play third base, moving Rafael Devers over to first base. This puts the Red Sox in an interesting spot with first baseman Triston Casas. Casas is very talented and could split time at first base and designated hitter with Devers. Or the Red Sox could trade him for an ace starting pitcher.

Grissom has flashed some promise in his short big-league career, but his best season was in 2022 with the Atlanta Braves. Romero is a 20-year-old prospect who's decent all-around with an above-average hit tool.
