There has been quite a lot of trade speculation regarding the Boston Red Sox's 24-year-old first baseman, Triston Casas. Casas was injured for most of the 2024 season but showed incredible potential in 2023.
Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer recently predicted the Red Sox would trade Casas to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Pirates star pitcher Jared Jones.
Here's the deal pitched by Rymer to send Jones to the Red Sox for Casas:
- Boston Red Sox receive: RHP Jared Jones
- Pittsburgh Pirates receive: 1B Triston Casas, 2B/SS David Hamilton
"Beyond his youth, the 23-year-old Jones would bring real promise to a Red Sox rotation that has already been upgraded with Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler," Rymer wrote. "He only had a 4.14 ERA as a rookie, yet his pure stuff was graded as elite. Even without Jones, the Bucs would still have Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller and Bubba Chandler, Braxton Ashcraft, and Thomas Harrington standing by in their system. That's a lot of pitching!
"What the Pirates have less of is impact bats, which has been a theme for a better part of the last decade. Casas has enormous potential in this regard, as his 222 games at the MLB level have yielded a .830 OPS and 42 home runs."
This trade would fit perfectly for both sides. Boston has a plethora of young hitters while the Pirates have a lot of young pitchers. Swapping a great young pitcher for a great young hitter would upgrade both systems. It's a true win-win deal on the surface.
This would only be able to happen if Boston acquires a first baseman or third baseman to replace Casas, assumingly being Nolan Arenado. If Boston does that, Casas could be on the move and netting Jones in return would be huge.
