The Boston Red Sox added superstar free agent Alex Bregman last week, but it's created more controversy than anybody saw coming.

The Red Sox appeared ready to play Bregman at the hot corner while sliding superstar Rafael Devers to the designated hitter spot. But Devers quickly spoke out in the media and indicated he had no interest in playing anywhere besides third base.

If Devers and the Red Sox can't figure this out, the star could request a trade out of Boston. This hasn't happened yet, but it's never too early to explore the possibility.

Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer recently suggested the Red Sox could move Devers to the Seattle Mariners for a loaded package that revolves around ace Luis Castillo.

Here's the deal pitched by Rymer that would send Devers to Seattle:

  • Seattle Mariners receive: 3B Rafael Devers, Cash
  • Boston Red Sox receive: RHP Luis Castillo, C Harry Ford (Mariners No. 3 prospect)

"Castillo was on Boston's radar before Crochet and Walker Buehler came to town, and you know what they say about never having too much pitching," Rymer wrote. "Indeed, Castillo joining the Red Sox's rotation would promise to transform it into a proper powerhouse. He's older and showing signs of decline, yet that fastball of his still plays as an elite pitch.

"Whereas he's blocked by Cal Raleigh in Seattle, Ford would be another Teel-replacement acquisition for the Red Sox. He's a capable defender who has a rare combination of both power and speed as a catcher."

Unless it's a significant, and I mean very significant, cash figure, this deal makes close to zero sense for the Red Sox.

Boston would need to receive a huge haul for Devers even if he handcuffs the Red Sox into trading him. Castillo and Ford, while talented and a haul in itself, simply isn't enough for Devers.

For the Mariners, this is a no-brainer. But, in reality, this deal seems more like a fantasy for Seattle than anything that could ever come to fruition.
