Redmi A4 5G Review: A fantastic budget smartphone

2 weeks ago 10

Over the past two to three quarters, many affordable smartphones within the Rs 10,000 price bracket have been released in India. The Redmi A4 5G is another newly announced entry-level smartphone that costs less than Rs 10,000, making it a fantastic choice for anyone looking to upgrade to a low-cost 5G phone. In order to find out whether the Redmi A4 5G is a sensible purchase, let’s look into what this smartphone is all about.

Redmi A4 5G Review: Design and Display

So, inside the box, you have the phone, the Redmi A4 5G, and the SIM ejector tool, and then we have some paperwork. Sadly, no cover is provided in the box. Last but not least, the firm provides a 33W charging brick and a USB A to USB C charging cable, which is rare for phones that cost less than Rs 10,000.

Let’s now quickly review the design and build. Amazingly, a sub-10K phone has a glass-like polish. Not bad. The phone’s glass finish gives it a very high-end appearance. It may be prone to smudges and fingerprints, but generally, it still appears high-end. The polycarbonate body and rear panel of the phone make it feel light despite its considerable size (212 grams).

The phone is only 8.22 mm thin, not too thick, and has a flat, attractive design that makes it quite comfortable to hold. A large camera module that looks like it has four camera cutouts is seen on the back panel. A large camera module that looks like it has four camera cutouts can be seen on the back panel. In this segment, it is pleasing to find that its plastic design has an IP52 grade for water and dust resistance. But keep in mind that you should keep IP52 as far away from water as you can; you should not get it wet.

Speaking of the ports, there is an audio jack right on top. Additionally, a SIM tray with a slot for a dedicated microSD card for storage expansion up to 1TB and support for two nano SIM cards is located on the left side of the frame. Next are the power button and the volume rockers on the right side. A primary microphone that will be utilised for phone calls, a USB Type-C port, and a single down-firing speaker are visible at the bottom.

All things considered, the design and build quality are incredibly good for a phone that costs less than Rs 10,000.

The selfie camera is housed in an old-fashioned water drop design notch on the front. It has a 6.88-inch HD+ LCD screen with 720 x 1,640 pixels of resolution. The display has a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a touch sampling rate of 240 Hz. We believe that the 600 nits of brightness that Redmi claims this phone has is excellent. On a bright, sunny day, the display outdoors is fully functional.

Both the text and the colour rendition are readable and decent. The smartphone is quite fluid, particularly when navigating through your favourite social media app or a webpage. Scrolling between reels on Facebook and Instagram feeds is also quite smooth. Without a doubt, this display will not let you down. Both the text and the visuals are extremely clear and sharp. It is quite highly optimised, and everything works effortlessly.

Watching videos and movies on this big screen is a lot of fun. The bezels are apparent but the content is edge-to-edge. It is still quite stunning. YouTube 4K videos will play at full HD.

The audio quality is above average because the device only has one mono-down-firing speaker. However, holding the phone in landscape mode can inadvertently obscure the speaker. As previously stated, the sound quality is mediocre, so don’t have high expectations.

Additionally, the side power button functions as a capacitive fingerprint scanner. It is quick to open the phone and responds well.

Redmi A4 5G Review: Performance and Cameras

Qualcomm’s 4nm Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 CPU and 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM are the Redmi A4 5G’s performance-enhancing hardware. The Redmi A4 5G has up to 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage, which can be increased to 1TB by using a microSD card.

In terms of performance, it is reliable and steady. Opening, navigating between apps, and multitasking all worked perfectly. Neither latency nor app failures occurred during our testing.

We played Call of Duty for a short time, but it was an amazing experience. The gameplay is smooth, quick, and easy to get started with. The smartphone did start to heat up after 30 minutes of continuous playing; we also noted some lag and frame dropouts, but not enough to be annoying. It’s excellent for light gaming.

Now let’s discuss the software. HyperOS, the operating system that powers the Redmi A4 5G, is based on Android 14 and will get OS updates for two years and security updates for four years. It is tidy, simple, and highly optimised. Bloatware does exist, though, and you may uninstall any unnecessary app.

The Redmi A4 5G has two cameras on the back: a primary 50-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 aperture and a second camera for depth sensing. Additionally, the device features a 5-megapixel f/2.2 front-facing camera for selfies.

The daylight images from the back camera are great. Because they support HDR, they deliver excellent colour reproduction and a wonderful dynamic range. The sharpness of the primary sensor is simply amazing. Overall, the portrait photos are satisfactory and have good edge detection. Selfies with 5 megapixels are wide and sharp. Moreover, skin tones range from fair to decent.

Full HD videos at 30 frames per second can be recorded using the device with good stability and clarity.

We may conclude that the Redmi A4 5G’s cameras are generally quite good.

Review of Redmi A4 5G

Regarding the battery, the Redmi A4 5G boasts a sizable 5,160mAh battery that will provide you with a great one to two days of use under typical use. The 33W provided charger would take more than two hours to fully charge the Redmi A4 5G, even though it charges at 18W.

Verdict

The glass-like exterior gives the phone a polished appearance, making it easy to mistake for a more premium gadget.

The phone’s cameras performed decently, and the video quality is quite respectable, given its price.

The single down-firing speaker is effective; it’s clean and loud. Even though we would have wanted to see two stereo speakers included with this phone—that would have been ideal—we are not complaining given the price.

Although we appreciate that Redmi offers a 33W charger, it would have been fantastic if it also enabled 33W charging support.

A 3.5mm headphone jack is included, which is always useful.

Our sole complaint about the Redmi A4 5G is that it should have removed the notch by now, but possibly we are demanding too much. Although we would have liked a punch camera design that feels more modern, it is unlikely to bother those searching for a low-cost smartphone.

With a nice screen, a long battery life, and dependable performance, the Redmi A4 5G is an all-around good phone.
