Digital Scams are a matter of concern all over the globe and the masses from India are getting trapped in one or the other scam every now and then. As of now, a new scam is taking place in India where the victims are charged excessively for returning missed calls from international numbers. Also known as the Premium Rate Service scam, it has impacted a lot of individuals in India who were charged a lot of money just because they returned the calls.
Reliance Jio has already asked all its subscribers to not return any international calls. The mail shared by Jio suggested that the premium rate services can be charged at unbelievably high prices per minute. In order to avoid falling into a trap like this, make sure you block any calls that are coming from suspicious international numbers and restrict returning calls received from a foreign number.
Premium Rate Service scam details
In the mentioned scam, the scammers trigger a call that disconnects before the victim can answer to the same so that the latter can get a missed call notification. When any of the victims gets curious and returns the call then they are connected to a premium rate service that charges an extra-ordinary fee per minute that could range up to a few hundred rupees per minute.
Some of the most common identification points of these scam calls are that they will be short in period (like a ring or two), calls will be made at unusual hours, and multiple call attempts from similar contact numbers.
Apart from the basic steps, you can also follow a few more steps to double-check your safety like enable international call blocking (only if you don’t have a close one living abroad), and report any suspicious number to the local authorities. However, that will not be of any major help as the authorities take time to initiate action.
