Republican Floats New Bill to Rename Airport After Trump

1 day ago 3

Freshman Republican Representative Addison McDowell renewed a proposal to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after President Donald Trump on Friday.

Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment via email on Friday.

Why It Matters

Republicans have been brimming with enthusiasm since Trump kicked off his second term on Monday. McDowell's plan to rename the D.C.-area airport is the second Republican proposal in a week to rename a major airport in honor of the 47th president.

Dulles International Airport, which is located just outside of Washington, D.C. in Virginia, was named after John Foster Dulles, a Republican who served as secretary of state during the administration of former President Dwight Eisenhower.

Washington's other major international airport, which is also located in Virginia, is named after former President Ronald Reagan.

What To Know

McDowell, who began his first term representing North Carolina's 6th Congressional District on January 5, introduced a House bill to rename Dulles International Airport to "Donald J. Trump International Airport" on Friday.

"We have entered the golden age of America largely thanks to President Trump's leadership," McDowell said in a press release accompanying the bill. "It is only right that the two airports servicing our nation's capital are duly honored and respected by two of the best presidents to have the honor of serving our great nation."

The bill is co-sponsored by Republican congressmen Brandon Gill, Riley Moore, Brian Jack and Guy Reschenthaler.

Reschenthaler led a similar effort last year to rename Dulles after Trump.

McDowell's proposal comes just one week after Republican Tennessee state Representative Todd Warner introduced a bill to rename Nashville International Airport to "Trump International Airport."

What People Are Saying

Reschenthaler said in a statement: "President Donald J. Trump, the greatest president of my lifetime, was just sworn into office for a second term after a historic landslide victory. This legislation will cement his status in our nation's capital as our fearless commander-in-chief, extraordinary leader, and relentless champion for the American people."

Jack said in a statement: "I am excited to co-sponsor Representative McDowell's legislation to honor President Trump's historic victory and mandate from the American people. After so many tried to 'cancel' President Trump during his post-Presidency, Representative McDowell's bill will enshrine President Trump's legacy on one of our capital airports."

What Happens Next

While Republicans currently control both houses of Congress, it's unlikely McDowell's bill would get the votes needed to reach Trump's desk if it is taken up and voted on in both chambers. In the Senate, the bill would need significant Democratic support to overcome a 60-vote filibuster threshold.
