Jennifer Tilly opened up about her decision against having kids after Tuesday’s new episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
As she also admitted to not feeling rich, despite the residuals she receives from The Simpsons, which her late-ex-husband, Sam Simon, helped create, and shared how much she actually paid for her rare Louis Vuitton boat purse, Jennifer, 66, said that when it came to having children, she “never” had the desire.
“Did you ever want to be a mom?” Garcelle Beauvais, 58, asked Jennifer on the February 18 episode of the RHOBH: After Show.
“Never,” Jennifer replied.
According to Jennifer, her childhood, which she described as not “very good,” deterred her from welcoming kids of her own.
“Everyone’s like, ‘I’ll be the perfect mom. I won’t make the same mistakes my mother did.’ But I had a feeling that I would,” she confessed. “So I felt like, we got to break the chain. I never really wanted children [but] my sister had a bunch, so I have nieces and nephews, so that’s really nice.”
As for viewers’ interest in her finances, Jennifer, who stars as a “friend” on RHOBH, said she was surprised by how fans reacted to her Simpsons payments.
“I’m astonished,” Jennifer admitted during an interview with E! News last month. “Number one, I don’t think of myself as rich. But I guess I’m delusional because I do have several properties and a purse apparently that cost $33,000.”
“I thought everybody knew that I had a piece of The Simpsons,” she continued. “It’s not a large piece, but even a little piece is something to write home about.”
Although Jennifer owns four homes, including two in Bel Air and one each in Las Vegas and Malibu, she said she and her boyfriend, Phil Laak, live simply in a “very small cluttered house.”
“Yes, there’s a giant house next door, but we don’t go there. I guess we’re kind of delusional. I don’t have a giant mansion or a chauffeur that calls me Miss Tilly and makes out with me like [Sutton Stracke]’s chauffeur. I just live my life the way that I used to live,” she reasoned. “[But] people thought that that was fabulous. They were like, ‘She has a house next door to her house and she bought a $4,000 dress for her doll.’ They’re like ‘high five.’ I thought people would be like, ‘That’s horrible that she spent that much money for a dress for her doll when people are hungry.'”
While Jennifer believes “it’s kind of gauche to flaunt your wealth,” she noted that that’s why people love the show.
“‘They’re so rich and they can afford all the plastic [surgery] that the heart could desire and designer clothes and jewels, but they’re still not happy.’ That is the key to Housewives,” she explained. “Like, ‘Wow, if I had all that wealth, I would be happy.’ But these people, they’re miserable. That’s why people like to watch.”
As for her purse, Jennifer admitted it didn’t actually cost $33,000, as was noted on the show.
“I’m just setting that straight right now,” she clarified. “They must have had some intern look it up. It’s very rare, maybe on the secondary market they jacked up the price but I called my purse contact and I said, ‘How much did I pay for that purse?’ She said, ‘$22,000.'”
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills season 14 airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on Bravo.
