Ricky Gervais is revealing how he would open the 82nd Annual Golden Globes Awards on Sunday — if he were hosting again.
The brutally cutting five-time Globes host mused on X about the prospect on Friday and came up with an idea.
“Sat in the bath wondering about what I would say if I were hosting The Golden Globes on Sunday,” he wrote. “It’s been a pretty good year for material.” And then: “Hello, and welcome to the 82nd Golden Globe awards. What a year it’s been. Hundreds of entertainers jumped at the chance to go to The Vatican to meet The Pope. Many from Hollywood. Obviously they weren’t content with only being part of the 2nd biggest pedo ring in the world…”
He also came up with a follow-up: “Justin Timberlake was convicted of Drink Driving. If he’d have gone to jail he’d have heard the words ‘Sexy Back’ a lot more often.”
Of course, the actual host on Sunday is comedian Nikki Glaser, who is also known for her ability to open fire on celebrities, having performed at several televised roasts (such as last year’s Netflix roast of Tom Brady, which she credits with landing her the Globes hosting gig).
Glaser recently commented on being compared to Gervais and noted how she will be different.
“I’m not gonna go so hard that anyone’s gonna be offended,” she said. “I’ve made a point not to, and that’s not to disappoint anyone who’s hoping I’m going to pull a Ricky Gervais. I’m not Ricky Gervais. This isn’t my last Golden Globes, this is my first one. He really went hard on his last one. He was ready to burn some bridges [because] it didn’t matter anymore … Celebrities shouldn’t be nervous because [showing they have a sense of humor about themselves is] a great opportunity for them to look cool.”
The Golden Globes air live Sunday on CBS and stream on Paramount+ at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
