Roy Wood Jr. jokes about the changing demands of modern life, from dating to customer service, in the official trailer for his Hulu stand-up comedy special Lonely Flowers, set to debut Jan. 17.
“I was at the gun range and I saw somebody get bad service — at the gun range! How you going to be rude to somebody who showed up to practice murder?” Wood Jr. said in the teaser that dropped on Tuesday.
“We ain’t going to make it,” he declared at one point, as the former Daily Show correspondent, now hosting CNN’s Have I Got News for You, also poked fun at the loss of human connection in today’s digital-centric society. “The only time you see an employee at the grocery store is when you do self-checkout wrong: ‘What you done to the machine? Get your ass out of there!’” he joked.
His fourth stand-up special was taped at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington in September. Wood Jr.’s last special, Imperfect Messenger, streamed on Paramount+. Wood Jr.’s Hulu special comes as the streamer leans into monthly stand-up specials under the banner of “Hulu’s Laughing Now.”
For eight years, Wood Jr. was a correspondent on The Daily Show. He guest-hosted the Comedy Central show in 2023 and headlined the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 2017.
He will also appear alongside Keanu Reeves and Jonah Hill in the comedy Outcome. His other credits include Paramount Pictures’ Fletch remake, Confess, Fletch, and guest appearances in Only Murders in the Building, Better Call Saul and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.
