Bryan Dobson has given an update on how his retirement is going as he admitted he isn't missing the working life.

The RTE legend has said that while he misses his colleagues and friends in the news station, he is loving retirement.

As a general election looms, it will be the first one in decades that the former newsreader hasn't been reporting on.

“Retirement is going just fine. I’m five months down at this stage, I retired in May, and I am enjoying it. I don’t miss it," said Bryan.

“I miss all my pals and the people I worked with. I see some of them the odd time and I hope I see them again when I’m 40 years out, but no I’m very happy.

“I had 37 years of it and it was time to get out. This is the first Irish General Election that I haven’t covered, either as a reporter or on a results show or as an interviewer since 1987.”

Bryan, who has been nicknamed Dobbo, admitted he doesn't mind when he is recognised from the news.

Speaking to the Irish Sun, he said: "I don’t know if everyone knows who Dobbo is!

“If you’re on, as I was, the TV five nights a week doing the news and people didn’t know who you are you’ve got a problem.

"The fact that people recognised me over the years was very satisfying.”

With the election slated to take place next month, Bryan said the outcome was "hard to call".

“I just look at the polls like anybody else," he said.

“The thing about the Irish electoral system now is that whatever government is formed, it will be a coalition.

“And then it will depend on who talks to who after the election and what the numbers will be like and the number of TDs they can bring to the table.

“Hard to really call what will or won’t happen really.”
