RTE's Marty Whelan has his sights set on new TV presenting gig but rules out one major show

Marty Whelan has revealed that he is eyeing up a return to TV, with his sights set on one show in particular.

The RTE Lyric FM presenter, who has presented a number of programmes on TV including Winning Streak alongside Sinead Kennedy, has admitted that it would be "lovely" to return to the screen.

However, he was clear that there was one TV programme that fans would never see him on.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Marty threw his hat in the ring to present the upcoming Irish series of The Traitors, which was confirmed earlier this year.

"There are lots of people who want to do Traitors," he said. "I am a very enthusiastic fella, I love radio but the TV would be lovely to do again."

However, he said that one show he has ruled out an appearance on is RTE's Dancing With The Stars.

"I have been asked to do it, but no," he said. "I wouldn’t be nervous but I’d have to give up my radio show, there's no way I would do that.

"Also, it’s not me. There are other things if someone said would I like to do it I would. I don’t want to partake in that, the commitment would be too much and it would take me three months out of my radio show, that would be crazy."

Marty also commented on whether a return of Winning Streak could be on the cards anytime soon. The competition show originally aired in 1990 and was a weekend staple for RTE. However, during the Covid-19 pandemic it was taken off the air due to safety concerns, and has never returned to our screens.

Asked if Winning Streak is set for a comeback, he said: "I have no idea, it’s entirely up to the National Lottery. We couldn’t run without them, but I think it should come back.

"It was huge for little people and big people. And that was the trick of it. It was a bit of family entertainment."

Co-presenter Sinead Kennedy has also said in the past that she would love for the show to come back.

"If I could do Winning Streak again with Marty, I would, I absolutely love it," she told RSVP Live in 2022. “It’s such a gorgeous feel good show, everyone asks because everybody misses it so I totally get it, but we don’t know.

"Marty and I get on so well. We’ve a great working relationship and we get on outside of work. Like we genuinely get on, so it is very easy.

“We can snap back in like it was never gone.”
