Marty Whelan has said that the arrival of his granddaughter has made him take a look at his health.

The RTE broadcaster's daughter Jessica welcomed her first child Lily Nora last year, and the happy news led him to become "more mindful than ever" of looking after himself.

Marty said that he is still active and thankfully full of energy, with no intention of retiring.

“I’m very proud of becoming a granddad. I feel terrific. I have every intention of being here for my granddaughter for a long time,” Marty said.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, he continued: “She’s terrific. She’s only six months old, so she’s a little bundle of joy. She smiles and she gurgles and she’s developing as they do, and it’s just wonderful to see her.

“Naturally, from a health point of view, you want to be here, to be a part of her life. It’s very important, no matter what.

“I’m more mindful than ever of the importance of keeping active, staying healthy and taking care of myself so that I can fully enjoy time with my family.”

The Lyric FM presenter is always on the go and feels "lucky" he still has heaps of energy.

“I do look after myself. I’m like a lot of people. We all love treats and I love all that, but it’s walking – it’s not necessarily going to the gym, but it is walking,” he said.

“I have an early start to the day. I’m very lucky – I have lots of energy, so I’m always on the go. And I’m always kind of out there and doing things, being on the radio every single morning on RTÉ Lyric FM. So, I love that, and that keeps me busy.

“I’ve no intention of retiring. I’m busy, I’m out there and I’m active, and I think it’s important to keep yourself busy, if you can."

He added: “And if you do retire, then it’s important to find other things to do, to make sure that your brain is taking over and that physically you’re up to something. It can be gardening, but it doesn’t matter. Whatever it is, you’re doing something that’s active. That’s really important."
