Amazon’s acclaimed rookie comedy series Mr. & Mrs. Smith is poised to make SAG Awards history.
Only two TV shows have ever received a best ensemble — comedy or drama — SAG Award nomination after entering a cast comprised of just two people: comedy Key & Peele in 2016 and drama The Last of Us earlier this year. Mr. & Mrs. Smith could be the third, given that only its John and Jane — as in, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, whose characters are at the heart of the series — are eligible for inclusion in its submission, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
That’s because its supporting and guest cast members — among them notables such as Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza González, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Sharon Horgan, Sarah Paulson, Parker Posey, Wagner Moura, Ron Perlman and Michaela Coel, as well as the show’s leading man’s mother, Beverly Glover — do not appear in enough episodes to be eligible to be listed alongside them.
In order to be eligible for a best ensemble cast entry, a performer must have a series regular contract and appear in a predetermined minimum number of original episodes aired during the calendar year and/or have guest star billing and appear in a majority of original episodes aired during the calendar year. Actors with co-star billing are not eligible for inclusion.
If the 2024 Emmys ceremony is any guide, Mr. & Mrs. Smith stands a very good shot at making the list of five finalists for the best comedy ensemble SAG Award — it was one of the eight nominees for the best comedy series Emmy, both Glover and Erskine were nominated in their respective lead acting categories, and the show, which came into the ceremony with 16 nominations, ended up winning two awards.
SAG Awards nominations voting will run Dec. 16, 2024 through Jan. 5, 2025. The nominees will be announced on Jan. 8.
