Samsung doesn’t increase update promise, Galaxy S25 gets 7 years

The Galaxy S25 has officially been announced to the public, and with it comes a promise that the phone will get at least seven years of updates and support. Samsung has not increased the amount of supported time for its newest phone, a departure from a recent trend of upping update promises.

The last few years have shown that companies like Samsung and Google are committed to offering more to customers. One way we’ve seen that is through product longevity. The amount of time these companies have promised that proprietary devices would be supported has been on the increase, with the latest promise being 7 years for the Galaxy S24 and the Pixel 9.

During the Unpacked event, Samsung noted that the Galaxy S25, S25+, and S25 Ultra would all be supported for seven years. That includes seven generations of One UI or Android and seven years of security updates. With that, the phones will be viable into 2032.

This comes as the Galaxy S24 series has the same exact promise, and other recent devices have been upgraded to a similar support structure. Essentially, Samsung has not increased its support promise for users, offering them the same roadmap for devices.

Of course, seven years is a long time for Samsung to promise to update the Galaxy S25, and it may not be such a bad promise for most users. The recent trend has been for OEMs to increase upgrade guarantees dramatically. Only a couple of years ago, we saw what seemed like a decent guarantee of around four years, and now, seven years has become the standard. That goes for both OS upgrades and security support.
