Samsung’s new wireless charging chip is ready for 50W speeds and Qi2

Samsung has unveiled a new wireless charging chip for smartphones that includes Qi2 support and significantly faster 50W wireless charging speeds.

Announced amid CES 2025 last week, Samsung has a new chip for wireless charging in the S2MIW06. The chip, a Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC), is specifically designed to improve wireless charging in devices. The highlight here is support for up to 50W speeds, significantly higher that some comparable chips available today. In theory, this capability could lead to wider adoption of faster wireless charging, as these speeds have only been adopted thus far by brands such as Oppo, Xiaomi, and OnePlus.

Beyond that, the chip also supports the Qi 2.2 standard, due for release this year. Samsung System LSI joined the WPC in 2023 and says it is actively participating in developing the updated standard.

This new chip supports all current profiles of the Qi standard, including the Baseline Power Profile which is the widest used, the Extended Power Profile which boosts speeds up to 15W, and the Magnetic Power Profile which debuted with Qi2 and uses magnets to improve alignment and boost speeds up to 25W.

Will this new chip be available in Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S25 series? While there are rumors of faster wireless charging, 50W hasn’t been mentioned anywhere, and seems unlikely. But this certainly sets the stage for future Galaxy devices getting a major wireless charging upgrade.

Samsung has reservations open now for the Galaxy S25 series, with a $50 credit when you pre-order and up to $1,200+ in savings. Reservations are free, and there’s no obligation to actually buy a device if you sign up, but there’s no other time you can get that $50 credit.
