Storch says he attempted to convince X to get clean, but ultimately failed.
Scott Storch has revealed that he once lived with late rap star DMX and attempted to help him get clean from drugs prior to his death.
During an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, the super producer, who has been open about his own battle with drug addiction and rehabilitation, spoke on his close friendship with DMX, who he deemed “one of my favorite people.”
Storch recalled a period in which he was housemates with the Ruff Ryders star where he attempted to convince X to enter rehab, despite Storch being a self-admitted cocaine addict himself.
“X was living with me, man, and like it was the blind leading the blind,” the GRAMMY Award-winner remembered. “I’m a coke addict, and he’s a crack addict, and I’m like trying to help him. I’m like, ‘You really need to get clean, man.'”
After convincing X to enter a rehab center in order to avoid a jail sentence, the rapper would later escape from the facility with the aide of a nurse, contacting Storch to let him know about his whereabouts. While Storch convinced X to return to the rehab center, X was not allowed be admitted due to his infraction, thus resulting in him being sent to jail for failure to complete the program.
Years later, Storch got word that X’s health had deteriorated due to his addiction and that he was diagnosed with emphysema and “one rock away from death.”
This prompted him and rap manager Steve Lobel to facilitate X’s transport to a rehab facility the pair were partners in at the time, however, after completing a detox, X vanished before taking the next steps in his road to recovery.
“We put him on a private plane to Washington to do a detox. He went through the whole detox, and the plan was to leave the detox and come to our facility, inpatient, and do rehab,” said Storch.
“He never made it back on the plane to head back, and we never saw him again, and that was me trying to save a man’s life that I really loved, man. He was such a special guy. One of the greatest to ever do it.”
In a more lighthearted portion of the interview, Storch recalled an instance in which actress and model Pamela Anderson showed up to a Super Bowl afterparty at his house, and DMX’s hilarious reaction to Anderson’s presence.
“There’s a knock on my door at 10 AM and it’s Pamela Anderson,” the former Roots member, who says about 700 people, including Snoop Dogg, Mike Epps, had attended the raucous party. “I knew he was upstairs sleeping or whatever,” he said of DMX.
“And Pamela was showing up and I was like, ‘Yo X, yo X. Check this out.’ I was all geeked out and thinking it’s so funny that I got Pamela coming over my house at 10 in the morning. And he comes over the railing of my house and he looks over and [says] ‘Baywatch!’ and then he just walked away.”
DMX passed away on April 9, 2021 as a result of a heart attack due to a drug overdose. He was 50-years-old at the time of his death.
