The Seattle Seahawks are planning to release linebacker Tyrel Dodson, who has started every game this season and has recorded 71 tackles so far, according to Brady Henderson.

Dodson signed onto the Seahawks just this last March, after having spent his first five seasons with the Buffalo Bills, initially serving as a depth player during his rookie year before taking on a significant role on special teams in 2021 and 2022.
However, Dodson's playing time saw a significant increase in 2023, when he played 51% of the defensive snaps. He capitalized on the opportunity, posting career highs with 74 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
Despite this and his record of tackles in the 2024 season, Dodson is now subject to waivers, meaning any team can claim him and take on his $1.1 million salary for the remainder of the season. Had he been released a week earlier, he would have been free to sign with any team immediately, but since the NFL trade deadline has passed, all players who are cut must first go through the waiver process.
As a current starter and a player who started 10 games for the Bills last year, it's highly likely that Dodson will be claimed by another team. If multiple teams put in a claim, the team with the worst record will have priority, as waiver claims are processed in reverse order of the standings, similar to the draft order.
The Seahawks' defense was stellar in the first three weeks of the season, ranking first in passing defense, fourth in scoring defense, and tied for fifth in red zone defense.

However, their recent performance has taken a downturn, with the team allowing an average of 35.7 points per game over the last three contests. Seattle's run defense has been a significant issue, sitting near the bottom of the league with 148.4 rushing yards allowed per game and 4.9 yards per carry.
It is likely that Seattle is trying to shake up its flagging defensive line, and waiving Dodson is almost certainly connected to that. Curiously, this is also occurring after the linebacker was involved in an incident during the Seahawks' Week 9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams when Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua was ejected from the game for attempting to throw a punch at Dodson.
