It has been tough sledding for the Oklahoma Sooners this season. They haven't been able to truly be competitive and with their loss to Ole Miss earlier today, they have done something for the first time since 1998.
The Sooners hadn't lost three straight games by double digits since then but this 2024 season has them on the wrong end of history. This team has looked out of sorts all year and this stat only reaffirms this.
This is the first season for the Sooners in the SEC and they have struggled heavily. They are now 1-4 in their SEC games this season, with their only win coming against the Auburn Tigers on the road.
This season was supposed to be an introduction to what could be for this program in the new conference but it's been a disaster so far. They have struggled on offense and it has shown against tougher competition this season.
Head coach Brent Venables spoke after the game about how he plans to keep the spirits of the team up following three straight defeats.
"You be honest with them. Sometimes the truth hurts. ... These are guys that deeply care. ... They have a lot of respect for being an Oklahoma Sooners. They believe in how we do what we do.
If the year continues to go down this route, Venables could be on the hot seat. He was hired to take this program to the next level but the Sooners have vastly underperformed during his tenure so far.
He owns a 20-14 record through two and a half seasons with Oklahoma, including a 10-3 year last season. The Sooners were expected to build off that but it has gone the complete opposite way for them.
Despite the loss, Venables still has faith in his team. He believes that the players have pride and won't just give up on the season.
"These guys aren't going to flinch — I promise you... I think everyone on the outside might assume guys will give up or check out... Not these guys."
The Sooners have their hands full the rest of the way but there is still time to at least clinch a spot in a bowl game.
Oklahoma has an easier game coming up when they play Maine at home. They then have to face the Missouri Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, and LSU Tigers to close out the season.
