Former Disney star Selena Gomez's new film Emilia Perez has left audiences divided as many viewers flocked to social media to slam the movie's "insanely offensive" tropes
Selena Gomez introduces 'Find Comfort' body care collectionSelena Gomez's new film has been slammed by critical fans.
The French musical crime film stars Gomez alongside Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon and Edgar Ramirez. The flick is based on the opera libretto of the same name and follows the story of a cartel leader who hires a lawyer to help make her disappear and transition into a woman.
Despite an entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, viewers are not impressed with the film and have taken to social media to slam the movie. Over on Reddit, some even branded Emilia Perez as "genuinely maybe the worst movie of the year" for them.

Someone else chimed in: "Insanely offensive, yes (it manages to windmill slam on every single bad trans movie trope, and that's even before you get into the Mexican culture aspect of it all), but frankly, the worst part of it was how incredibly boring everything was."
Another person chimed in: "I'm honestly baffled that this movie has gotten any love at all," while another said: "Felt like watching a bad SNL skit in many parts."
One scathing comment picked apart the film's musical number: "I just found it deeply silly and I was bursting out laughing at stuff that was unintentionally funny. Like we’re really gonna do a musical number about Mexican cartel violence? Tonally just did not hit for me. Zoe Saldana was killing it though."
Another explained: "Pretty much everything is terrible except for the acting. The screenplay is attrocious and offensive, the tone is all over the place, the cinematography is ugly most of the time and all songs except one or two are boring. Good songs are the minimum you expect from a musical, but the songs on it are just people talking on autotune."
Elsewhere in Selena news, the former Disney star was recently spotted at a Sabrina Carpenter concert wearing a rather unusual ensemble. Gomez took her 11-year-old sister Gracie to see her fellow Disney alumni in LA and wore a bright pink onesie complete with rabbit ears.
She shared an adorable picture on her Instagram Story and gushed: "One of my favourite nights for my sissy and her friends."
