A woman's curiosity led her to knocking a hole into her bathroom wall and discovering a hidden secret.
TikTok user @aoife.christina decided to find out what was behind her bathroom wall, showing viewers the empty space she found that she is hoping to incorporate into her bathroom.
Aoife's viral TikTok has gained almost 500,000 views since it was first shared on October 20. The creator, who calls herself a 'DIY girlie', has been documenting the renovation of her home on her profile for some time.
Aoife posted the video with the text overlay, "When curiosity gets the best of you but you discover a foot of wasted space in your tiny bathroom." The clip shows the homeowner's small bathroom, including a shower cubicle, and the hole she put in the wall to unveil the empty area. "New bathroom? Yes please," Aoife wrote in the video's caption.
Bathroom renovation is a popular undertaking for homeowners across the U.S. They have spent more time and money on home improvement projects over the last two years, Statista reports.
Among the U.S. homeowners who decided to renovate their bathrooms in 2023, the biggest reason was that they could "no longer stand the style of the old bathroom," with 48 percent of respondents replying that way.
Other popular reasons included bathroom deterioration, improving resale value, and making bathrooms more accommodating.
Aoife's bathroom discovery sparked many an interaction between her fellow TikTok users in the comments section of the video. The creator said to one commenter that she was thinking about making the space into shelving for things like plants and soaps.
Another suggested making it into a linen closet, which Aoife called a "fun idea."
"I stg [swear to God] if you replace that beautiful yellow shower and pretty wallpaper with an all white bathroom I will lose it," posted Via. Aoife responded: "The shower is cracked and the wallpaper is moldy/peeling! I promise it won't be all white though."
Another person with the username @ak5328 suggested that the space is there "probably entirely because of the size of the shower cubicle."
"Baby that is a chase," wrote @ally_g13 to which Aoife responded: "It's going to be so good."
Another commenter said that the space is for piping, but Aoife responded to say that there are no pipes in the hidden area she unveiled.
"I'm tired and read that as you found a foot in the space behind your shower," posted Maya.
