"We are back at our studio which we had to evacuate on Wednesday."

He directed viewers to video footage of the El Capitan Entertainment Centre, where the Jimmy Kimmel studios are based, with a large blaze raging in the background.

"That's our building our building right there, the El Capitan, that is how close this fire was to our theatre here," he continued.

"Many of us had to leave our homes in a hurry, some of our coworkers lost their homes."

Kimmel choked up again as he watched footage of the fire blazing through Hollywood.

"It has been terrible, everyone who lives in the city knows someone, most of us multiple people, families, friends, neighbours, colleagues, whose houses burned down," he said.

"And the truth is we don't even know if it's over. We had a hundred mile per hour winds fuelling this nightmare, as of tonight winds are back."

"And I think I speak for all of us when I say it has been a sickening, shocking, awful experience but has also been in a lot of ways a beautiful experience because once again we see our fellow men and women coming together to support each other," he said with tears welling up in his eyes.

"People who lost their own homes were out volunteering in parking lots helping others who lost theirs."

Kimmel's live audience burst into applause as he commended the selfless actions of the many LA community members who rolled up their sleeves to help in the relief effort.

He continued to take a moment to criticise the incoming US president Donald Trump for his comments about the crisis.

"Tonight I don't want to get into all the vile and irresponsible and stupid things our alleged future president and his gaggle of scumbags chose to say during our darkest and most terrifying hour," he said before sharing that he would rather focus on thanking the men and women who have worked to control the blaze.

"We should never stop thanking them," Kimmel added as the audience stood to give a standing ovation for the tireless efforts of emergency workers and volunteers.
