Long-distance running legend Sir Mo Farah demonstrated the tenacity that has made him one of the world's top athletes when he sprinted after potential thieves in his gated community. The retired Olympic distance runner was out for a jog with his wife Tania last week when he left his phone on the side of a private road, planning to pick it up at the end of his run.

However, before he could retrieve it, a large white van with two men inside pulled up, and one of them grabbed the phone before they sped off. But they didn't reckon with Sir Mo, who, according to an eyewitness, took off after the van at 'Olympic speed' and 'full throttle'.

When the crooks realised who they were dealing with, they quickly returned the phone before making a hasty exit, the Daily Mail reports. Yet, Sir Mo is reportedly livid about the incident, as the road where his phone was swiped is no ordinary road.

He and his wife reside in a plush 964-acre gated community, reassured by the extensive security on site. So, the 5,000 and 10,000-metre champion is utterly baffled as to how the suspects managed to bypass the round-the-clock security detail, reports the Express.

A source told the Mail on Sunday that an investigation into the incident has been initiated, however when probed the 41 year old chose not to comment on the event.

This follows his announcement of retirement after finishing fourth at Tyneside's Great North Run in September last year, a race he had previously clinched a record six times.

Sir Mo and his wife Tania, also a long-distance runner, have been married for 14 years. They've known each other since their younger days when they were part of the same West London running club.
