Sophie Turner Reflects on “Incredibly Sad” Divorce From Joe Jonas: “We Had a Beautiful Relationship”

Sophie Turner is reflecting on her divorce from Joe Jonas.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar published Wednesday, the actress said that though she couldn’t say much about the end of her four-year marriage to Jonas amid them “going through a legal process,” she admits the separation was “incredibly sad.”

“We had a beautiful relationship, and it was hard,” Turner said.

Since ending their marriage, Turner has returned to the U.K. which has made the actress feel fulfilled.

“I’m so happy to be back. It felt as if my life was on pause until I returned to England,” she said. “I just never really feel like myself when I’m not in London, with my friends and family. I was away for so long — six years — and it was when my friends were getting engaged, and when I got pregnant. I went for dinner with someone the other day, and she said, ‘I never got to touch your belly.’ We didn’t have those key experiences with each other.”

Turner and Jonas share two daughters and when the kids are with Jonas, Turner describes the time as “agony.”

She said that becoming a mother “changed me so much in every way. Before I had kids, I was very depressed and anxious, and I would isolate [myself] a lot. Now, I think I live my life for them. I want them to see me having a social life and enjoying work and thriving in my career and relationships. I want them to see a hard-working mum. I’ll come back and say, ‘This is why Mummy was away – it’s because she’s doing this for you, so Father Christmas can come with a big bundle of presents.'”

In May, Turner also discussed her divorce with British Vogue, recalling how much of an impact the reports alleging she was a bad mother who liked to party had on her.

“I mean, those were the worst few days of my life,” Turner said. “I remember I was on set, I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn’t leave. My kids were in the States, and I couldn’t get to them because I had to finish [ITV drama] Joan. And all these articles started coming out.”

She continued, “It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother — mum guilt is so real! I just kept having to say to myself, ‘None of this is true. You are a good mum, and you’ve never been a partier.’”

“I mean, it’s unfathomable the amount of people that will just make shit up and put it up based on a picture,” she said. “A picture might tell a thousand words, but it’s not my story. It felt like I was watching a movie of my life that I hadn’t written, hadn’t produced or starred in. It was shocking. I’m still in shock.”

Jonas and Turner had two marriage ceremonies in 2019. They first tied the knot in Las Vegas after the Billboard Music Awards and followed up with a more formal ceremony in France the following month.

After mutual friends encouraged them to meet, the two began dating in 2016 and got engaged a year later. They welcomed their first daughter in 2020 and their second in 2022.

Jonas filed for divorce last September. In a brief statement posted to Turner’s Instagram at the time, she wrote on behalf of both of them that they “mutually decided to amicably end [their] marriage.”

The statement continued, “There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”

Earlier this week, Turner celebrated her boyfriend Peregrine Pearson’s birthday on social media. This marks Turner’s first public relationship since her divorce from Jonas.
