Soulection Taps Into 'Electric' F1 Energy in Abu Dhabi

Amid the controlled chaos of the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Soulection co-founder Joe Kay was on hand, providing a musical backdrop to the latest sign that F1 is truly having a moment as we near the top of a new year.

Speaking with Complex about the experience, Kay, who served as the Grid DJ for the big race, highlighted how he was able to tap into a truly “electric” energy on the ground.

“I don't know if I've been around a sport where I've seen this much passion in some time,” Kay said. “So it's been really good to be around. You see a lot of people from different walks of life. There's people from all over the world. It's really a global sport. I can see why it's one of the biggest sports in the world."

Per Kay, Soulection is an ideal fit for the world of F1, as its core ethos of keeping art “eclectic, diverse, and multifaceted” matches a similar energy at the heart of the sport that’s soon to be the subject of a Brad Pitt and Damson Idris-starring film from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski.

“Me and my team tap into so many cultures of sound,” Kay said of Soulection and F1’s inherently complementary characteristics. “We might be in Brazil. We might be in South Africa. We might be back in the States in Detroit, playing true house music. And then we might be in Jamaica. As well as Latin culture. We tap into so many sounds, so I think Soulection also attracts a variety of people from all walks of life—different languages and different backgrounds."

Following this weekend’s race, Soulection hosted an exclusive party in a pit lane garage, complete with an extended set from Kay himself. Idris also pulled up for the special moment, adding to the hype behind his and Pitt’s film, aptly titled, simply, F1. Additionally, an F1-focused edition of Soulection Radio was recorded, which will be available online soon, while Soulection x F1 merch was also made available to those in attendance.
