Southern Hospitality Season 3, Episode 4 Recap: Will and Emmy Against the World

7 hours ago 4

Southern Hospitality keeps bringing the heat! Last week, Brad and TJ confronted Will over his comments about Emmy. Meanwhile, gossip about Will’s drunken rants spread throughout Republic, and Michols knew he had to talk to Emmy. The group headed to Lake Wylie to celebrate Lake’s birthday. While hanging out in the pool with Maddi, TJ said his issues with Joe are deeper than the Luann thing. TJ then told production that, three years ago, he and Joe slept in the same bed and cuddled. That moment made TJ realize how strong his feelings are for Joe, and it had a major impact on their friendship. Here’s what went down in Southern Hospitality Season 3, Episode 4: “A Lake House Divided.”

This week, Michols finally tells Emmy what Will said about her. Things go sideways when the group confronts her about it at Lake’s birthday dinner. TJ and Joe slowly start to interact at the lake house, and a pool injury puts things into perspective. They meet for drinks to hash things out, but it’s clear they have a lot to work through.

Out on the boat at Lake Wylie, Lake tells Molly and Siobhan that she hopes Brad makes a move. They counter that he did, because he took her on a date. But Lake is used to men going above and beyond for her, so she’s not giving up the chase just yet. Meanwhile, Molly gushes over how hot Austin is. Guess him mispronouncing espresso wasn’t a dealbreaker.

Later that day, Lake’s dad, stepmom, sister, and brother stop by for a surprise visit. Lake’s dad is skeptical of Joe, but Joey Bottles assures him he’s not the one to worry about. Brad is so busy getting ready that he misses it. But Lake says his timing was actually perfect, because her dad doesn’t like anyone she’s dated.

The group gets ready for the night’s white party, as the guys handle the food. They let Joe handle the chicken wings. Which ends up being a mistake, as they realize at dinner the wings aren’t cooked.

Michols confronts Emmy about Will

Michols sets Emmy aside to talk about Will. He obviously didn’t expect her to respond by laughing. “I’m laughing because Will is my person, my best friend, that is my rock,” Emmy says, also calling him the love of her life and her safe space. So he stops beating around the bush and says what he heard Will say the very first time he met him. He claims Will ranted that he was miserable and called Emmy anorexic and self absorbed. “It really pissed me off, the level of disrespect,” he says.

But Emmy still isn’t phased. She claims Will told her what he said right away. I definitely didn’t get that impression last week, but Emmy keeps insisting he did. To her, he was venting due to stress from school. She also turns the conversation around to Siobhan and Molly, like she did last week. Michols is clearly frustrated. It seems like Emmy is projecting all her anger onto the girls. It hurts him that Emmy isn’t listening. But they hug it out and get ready for dinner.

Emmy has another breakdown at Lake’s birthday dinner

Emmy shows off her outfit to Will over FaceTime. Will, who apparently knows about undertones and seasonal analysis, applauds her for accessorizing with gold over silver. At dinner that night, Molly asks why Will didn’t come. Emmy says he’s too busy with work and school. TJ asks about her talk with Michols. Emmy says it was good, but Michols says she gave him “the run-around.”

Emmy doesn’t want to talk about it in front of everyone. But Maddi tells her it involves everyone, since they all know what Will said. Emmy refuses to engage because Will isn’t there to defend himself. The girls tell Emmy to speak for herself. But she continues defending Will, her “safe person.” She insists Will told her what he said immediately. In her words, he was just worried he can’t make her happy, and said she works out too much. “That’s not what I heard,” interjects Lake. TJ says Will questioned if Emmy is his “end-all-be-all.” Michols gets mad that Emmy is sugar-coating what he told her earlier.

Emmy flips out that they aren’t being good friends to Will and storms off. She says people should talk to her privately. As Maddi starts to get up, she adds, “But not now!” The birthday girl sarcastically says, “Happy birthday to Lake!” and calls Emmy “so disrespectful.” Molly says Will shouldn’t comment on Emmy’s body, adding that it’s not like he has an eight-pack like Austin.

Emmy’s dramatic Lake Wylie exit

Emmy calls Will sobbing, and says she has to get out of there. It’s like her breakdown over the dresses all over again. She has mascara tears running down her face and is hyperventilating. “Everyone was in on it,” she says, claiming they said Will told them she’s not the love of his life and doesn’t make him happy. “That’s bullsh*t,” Will responds. He sends his brother to pick her up.

Maddi runs in to check on her. In a confessional, she says it reminds her of her relationship with Trevor. Michols, TJ, and Brad eventually follow. Emmy continues to accuse them of not being good friends to Will. TJ, clearly upset, says it’s hard to hear Emmy gush about their future when he knows Will talks sh*t about her. Emmy also says it was a one time thing. As Brad said last week, that’s not true. Will actually went on similar rants at other King Street bars.

Emmy says if the guys were real friends, they would’ve come to her and Will separately and asked if she’s okay. Editors remind us that’s exactly what they did. Multiple times over the night, they emphasized it came from a place of love and wanting to make sure Emmy’s okay. “You don’t do this to people you care about!” she scolds in a confessional. As Will’s brother drives her away, Emmy says she feels like she can breath again.

The next morning, Will and Emmy joke about the unblended contour on her chin. It’s the first time all season they’ve seemed like the happy couple Emmy insists they are.

A concussion puts things into perspective for Joe and Maddi

Despite Emmy’s dramatic exit, the others had a grand time celebrating Lake’s birthday that night. But Joe has something more serious than an average hangover. Editors cut to footage of them all in the pool, showing how Joe banged his head on the side. After they leave Lake Wylie, Joe throws up twice. Maddi takes him to the hospital, where they realize he had a concussion. The scary moment makes Maddi realize how much she loves Joe. While she doesn’t like to think too much about the future, she knows she wants one with him.

As he recovers from his injury, Joe says how nice it was to be cordial with TJ at Lake Wylie. He also realizes it’s important to make amends. Because he’s still blocked, Joe has Maddi text TJ to set up a meeting.

TJ and Joe hash things out

TJ agrees to meet Joe at a bar. He remembers Joe’s signature drink and orders it for him. The two reflect on how close they were, and where things went wrong. Joe says that, when he woke up in Luann’s apartment, he thought TJ was the one person he could trust. TJ apologizes for outing the hookup, but says he was annoyed Joe didn’t take accountability. Then things got worse with the nasty texts. Joe admits he took things too far, but says that TJ blocked him so quickly, he didn’t get the chance to apologize. He was also super hurt by the block.

TJ adds that their issues went back before Luann, bringing up the moment from three years ago. Joe dismisses the cuddle as not a big deal. But TJ counters that it was a big deal to him. And we leave off on a “to be continued.”

Southern Hospitality Season 3 continues Thursdays at 9/8c on Bravo.
