What happened: Cyprus enhances digital connectivity with BlueMed cable
Sparkle and Cyta have signed an agreement to bring the BlueMed submarine cable to Cyprus, enhancing the island’s connectivity with Greece and several Mediterranean countries. This agreement, formalised at the Capacity Middle East event in Dubai, will see a branch of the BlueMed cable landing in Yeroskipos, Cyprus, strengthening the region’s digital infrastructure.
BlueMed is a high-capacity submarine cable system connecting Italy with France, Greece, and several Middle Eastern nations, including India, through a partnership with Google and other industry leaders. With an impressive initial design capacity of more than 25 terabits per second (Tbps) per fibre pair, BlueMed is poised to support the growing demand for digital services in the region.
The landing in Cyprus is a significant milestone, improving high-speed connectivity and enabling the delivery of high-performance internet services. Cyta’s strategic role in the Eastern Mediterranean as a connectivity hub is further solidified, positioning it to better serve its enterprise and individual customers.

Why it’s important
The BlueMed submarine cable landing in Cyprus is a significant step for regional connectivity. With over 25Tbps capacity per fiber pair, it will provide high-speed, reliable connections between Cyprus, Greece, and other Mediterranean countries.
This supports Cyprus’ digital evolution, enhancing internet services, data transfers, and digital content access. Cyta’s involvement strengthens its role as a regional digital hub.
BlueMed also diversifies existing routes, like the MedNautilus cable, adding reliability to the regional network and helping Cyta meet growing demand for advanced digital services.
