TV funnyman Stephen Mulhern has sadly had to bow out of his gig for the beloved Big Fat Soap Quiz this year after the heartbreaking loss of his father.

The presenter, famed for jazzing up our screens on shows like Britain's Got More Talent and Catchphrase, is in mourning following the death of his dad, Christopher.

The 47 year old star, who launched his showbiz journey with CITV, is notoriously private about his family life. Yet, the tragic news has emerged that he's been forced to take a step back from the limelight. OK! first reported his withdrawal from the show due to the death of his father.

The update comes amidst concerns after Stephen was reportedly seen collapsing at a restaurant and taken to hospital for a check-up. He was rushed from Sunningdale, Berks to Frimley Park hospital by medics.

A spokesperson for the entertainer shared: "Stephen has had an incredibly tough time over the past few weeks. His beloved father recently passed away which has hit him hard and has been understandably very stressful.

"In addition he had a procedure which took place yesterday (Wednesday). Following the anaesthetic that was administered, he had a few drinks which made him unwell and he was taken in to hospital as a precaution. He is now back home recovering."

TV favourite Stephen is bowing out from his role as the host of Big Fat Soap Quiz, and has often shared touching tales of his East End upbringing with his dad Christopher, who helped him hone his craft while working at the family's market stall.

The star has always been vocal about his gratitude towards his parents, once saying: "I don't mean to sound soppy, but they worked so incredibly hard to bring up me and my two brothers and sister."

With fans curious about who'll fill Stephen's shoes, it's revealed that ex-Corrie star Sally Lindsay will be taking the reins for the 2024 show, pitting soap giants against each other. Team Corrie will be headed by Jack P Shepherd, aka David Platt, while Mark Charnock, Emmerdale's Marlon Dingle, captains the opposing team.

The rest of the line-up remains under wraps.
