The third season of Euphoria is going forward without one of its regular characters.
Storm Reid, who played Gia Bennett, the younger sister of Zendaya’s Rue, said she won’t be returning to the series. Euphoria is set to begin production on season three in January, three years after the show’s second season premiered on HBO.
In a red carpet interview at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Governors Awards, Reid told Rotten Tomatoes that she wouldn’t be returning to Euphoria: “Unfortunately, Gia’s not returning for the third season, but I’m so, so indebted to the cast and crew of that show [and] to HBO. Euphoria is a really special thing.” Sources confirm Reid won’t be part of season three.
Season two of Euphoria was one of HBO’s biggest shows of 2022, averaging about 16 million cross-platform viewers per episode. That season concluded on Feb. 27, 2022. The Emmy-winning drama, created by Sam Levinson, has since gone through a number of delays — including when Levinson turned his attention to The Idol for HBO — which led to a cooling of Levinson and Zendaya’s once close relationship, as The Hollywood Reporter revealed earlier this year.
HBO announced a production start date for season three in July, and network head Casey Bloys reiterated earlier this month that the show was still on track for that date amid rumors (fueled by Zendaya and other cast members committing to movie roles) that it would be delayed again. “Nothing has changed,” Bloys told reporters on Nov. 12. “We are happy. We’re moving ahead. It’s eight episodes.”
