The Sunset fire ignited in Hollywood Hills on Wednesday and reached 60 acres, according to the most recent update from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).

Newsweek reached out to the LAFD by phone for comment.

Why It Matters

The Sunset fire was one of five burning in Los Angeles County on Thursday. According to an update from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), it was the smallest of the ongoing blazes.

As flames from all the fires encompass roughly 29,000 acres, thousands of people have evacuated. At least five people have died, and there have been numerous injuries to civilians and firefighters.

What To Know

The Sunset fire ignited on Wednesday evening. Its cause is still under investigation.

As of the most recent LAFD update, the majority of the evacuation order issued for the fire has been lifted, except for the area north of Franklin from Camino Palmero Street (the fire's eastern border) to North Sierra Bonita Avenue (the fire's western border).

According to the update, the LAFD was keeping that area closed to monitor it for flare-ups.

Although many residents who evacuated because of the Sunset fire were permitted to return to their homes, the National Weather Service (NWS) said a red flag warning will remain in place for the Los Angeles area through Friday evening. A red flag warning is issued when there are favorable conditions for fire spread.

An image from the UC San Diego camera feed shared on CAL FIRE's website showed smoky conditions over the area of the Sunset fire.

Sunset Fire Containment

Multiple agencies have reported that the Sunset fire is "fully contained" as of Thursday.

The LAFD didn't mention containment statistics in its most recent update, though many evacuation orders had been lifted.

Gusty winds were still blowing across Los Angeles on Thursday. The winds were contributing to fire spread and danger.

What People Are Saying

CAL FIRE in a summary of the Sunset fire: "Residents are asked to be cautious when returning to their homes because firefighters are continuing to work in their neighborhoods."

NWS Los Angeles in a red flag warning: "Critical Red Flag fire weather conditions will continue across much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties through Friday due to gusty Santa Ana winds and low humidities. While winds had diminished some last night, they are increasing and becoming more widespread today and will continue into Friday morning.

"With the enhanced Santa Ana winds today through Friday morning, there will be the increased risk of rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior, including long range spotting, on existing fires as well as any new fires."

What Happens Next

Several fire-related weather warnings remain in place, including the red flag warnings and high wind warnings.
