Boston Red Sox fans might want to pump the brakes on the Tanner Scott hype.
A recent report indicated the Red Sox are the "clear front-runners" to sign Scott, who's viewed as the best reliever available in free agency. However, on Tuesday, MassLive's Chris Cotillo said such reporting might be inaccurate.
"They're one of a handful of teams that have been involved, but there's expected to be a big-market bidding war," Cotillo wrote of Scott and the Red Sox. "Calling anyone a clear frontrunner on Scott is probably premature considering the competition for him. Agents who represent free agent relievers believe the market is waiting on him to move."
Cotillo, citing colleague Sean McAdam, also offered insight into Scott's potential price tag.
"Scott is the clear prize of the free agent relief class after a dominant season for Miami and San Diego," Cotillo wrote. "He's going to get a lucrative multi-year deal with our Sean McAdam hearing he might reach something in the four-year, $80 million range. The Red Sox still sit $26-27 million below the $241 million luxury tax threshold they said they were willing to exceed, so a serious run at Scott is possible."
Boston currently lacks an established closer, a role Scott likely would fill if signed.
In 2024, Scott posted a 1.75 ERA, 1.125 WHIP, and 22 saves across 72 appearances for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres.
