The Television Critics Association has canceled next year’s winter press tour.
The move is the latest blow to the journalistic institution. TCA is traditionally a semi-annual multi-week conference in Los Angeles where TV critics and reporters attend hundreds of studio-sponsored panels which present upcoming programming, as well as executive Q&As. There’s also the annual TCA Awards, where critics honor the best programming of the year.
“We are writing with the disappointing news that the Winter TCA tour is canceled,” wrote TCA President Jacqueline Cutler in a letter to members. “As you know, Hollywood is in a deep contraction. While several streamers, networks and studios committed, it was not enough for a full press tour. We wanted to be respectful of our members’ need to plan so, as a board, we decided on an early November deadline to make this decision.”
“I want to stress something that members who attended last February and July already know – those were great tours,” she added. “Executives I have talked with have been exceptionally positive about the last two press tours. More importantly, each stressed wanting to participate in the Summer 2025 tour, and we are already working toward that.”
The pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood strikes presented significant hurdles for the TCA tours, which have also struggled in recent years to bolster studio participation amid the industry-wide shift from a broadcast-and-cable model to one that emphasizes year-around streaming programming.
