Tears at Dog's Reaction to Finding Out the Holidays Actually End—'The Loss'

2 days ago 4

Many have related to a dog left devastated by the fact Christmas and the holiday season has come to an end for another year.

Rex the cocker spaniel, who lives in Essex, England, recently celebrated Christmas with his owners, Edd Buckley, 27, and his partner Jemma, 29, and it's safe to say he enjoyed it.

"Rex absolutely loved the festive season, especially his very own 'Rex's Christmas Countdown,'" Buckley told Newsweek: a morning ritual where Rex opened treats and gifts, which Buckley filmed and shared across Rex's social media channels, all named @shoutout2myrex.

"Every morning, Rex would eagerly run out of his crate, dash into the kitchen, and sit patiently, waiting for his advent calendar treat. It became a cherished ritual," Buckley said.

But tragically, all good things must come to an end, and as Christmas passed, so did Rex's special advent calendar. "Even after Christmas, he continued sitting in front of the spot where the calendar used to be," Buckley said.

A video showing Buckley's devastation at the festive period, and therefore his daily gifts, being over, has proved popular on TikTok, boasting over 380,000 views and 27,000 likes since being shared on December 28. It was captioned, "Rex hasn't come to terms with the loss of his Advent Calendar yet."

Buckley secretly films Rex, who sits in front of where the calendar used to be, staring at it intently, as Buckley has to break the news: "Rex, darling, there's no more advent calendar. No more."

Rex refuses to believe it, and jumps up at where the calendar used to be—now replaced with a photo frame until the next winter holiday, and gives his owner the ultimate puppy-dog eyes.

TikTok users were outraged on Rex's behalf, as hundreds of commenters demanded his owners make Christmas a year-round thing for the adorable pup.

"Please kindly buy 12 more Advent Calendars for the rest of the year! Immediately," one person wrote, as another demanded: "You make one for him! YOU DO IT RIGHT NOW!"

One wrote, alongside a crying emoji: "That really upset me I can't cope with things like this," and as one put it: "This has broken my heart refill the calendar with treats immediately!"

Buckley told Newsweek "the idea of a 365-day calendar has even been suggested on social media—but sadly, we don't have the time for that!"

He laid out some of Rex's Christmas highlights, some gifted by brands who follow the pup on social media, and said he was "spoiled" with "treats, gifts, and even a visit to Santa Paws and The Grinch."

"On Christmas Day, he had his own special dinner with turkey, peas, a small piece of gammon, and carrots. He loved every bite!"

Cocker spaniels like Rex have long been popular family pets, known for their intelligent, happy and gentle nature, and being good with children and other dogs, and previously spent years holding the title of the most popular breed in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Buckley acknowledged it's "bittersweet" to see Rex "a bit sad now that the holidays are over," but assured fans "we're already planning for next year's '12 Days of Rexmas' to keep the festive spirit alive."

And in further exciting news, he revealed his partner Jemma is expecting their first child—and "we can't wait to see how Rex takes to his new role as big brother, we're certain he'll be amazing!"
