According to Ian Rapoport, "Comeback: High school state championship-winning coach and NFL QB Teddy Bridgewater is coming out of retirement and is expected to sign with the Lions, sources tell The Insiders. Bridgewater appeared on nflnetwork and revealed his plans to play again. Back to Detroit."
As stated, following the 2023 NFL Season, Bridgwater chose to leave the game of football. He did not leave as a player but instead chose to take a job as the head coach of Miami Northwestern.
Bridgwater led the team to a 12-2 record and led the Bulls to a FHSAA Class 3A Championship. Following the big victory, the former NFL quarterback revealed he still had the desire to play in the NFL.
Now, Bridgewater will get his chance by presumably coming in as the second-string quarterback behind Jared Goff. Hendon Hooker is the current backup, but it would be believed that Bridgewater could and would step into the backup role instead.
Goff has been playing some fantastic football, but anything can happen in the game. Should he unfortunately go down with an injury, it would be Bridgwater stepping in to replace him. This is assuming that the former Lions backup assumes the backup role once again.
The Lions are currently 13-2 on the season and are in first place in the NFC. However, the Minnesota Vikings are also 13-2 and are angling to not only secure the NFC North but the No. 1 seed as well.
Detroit will play the Vikings San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, and finish the season against the Vikings. Should the Lions beat the 49ers on Sunday, and the Vikings lose to the Green Bay Packers — the division will belong to the Lions.
Now, the Lions have a big insurance policy in place by signing Bridgwater again. Again, should Goff go down for any reason, then the former NFL quarterback will be there to ensure Detroit maintains its record and standing in the regular season or playoffs.
