Why It Matters
The shooting is the second double homicide to occur in Milwaukee in recent days. On Christmas Eve, the Milwaukee Medical Examiner identified Deontay Long, 24, and Rodney Walls, 36, as victims in a shooting in a nearby area, along 38th Street. A suspect for the shooting has not yet been identified.
What To Know
The two teenagers were sitting in a vehicle along South 37th Street in Milwaukee when a man fired shots into the car, hitting the pair several times.
The 15-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 18-year-old was taken to the hospital where he died from his wounds. Neither victim has been identified at the time of writing.
Later, police arrested a man in connection to the shooting. Authorities have asked that anyone with any information on the suspect to contact the Milwaukee Police.
Police are treating the shooting as a double homicide.
What People Are Saying
In an interview with local media, Milwaukee resident Ashlee Knight said: "Those are kids. You know, I just talked to both of their parents and consoled them on Christmas, and that's the hard part. Police have not identified a suspect and are continuing the investigation."
What Happens Next
Milwaukee Police officers have said that further updates will be released when more information is available on the case. In the meantime, they have asked residents who may have information on the shooting to contact the authorities at the Milwaukee Police Department at (414) 935-7360, or via Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS or P3 Tips.
The community and local authorities are calling for stronger measures to combat gun violence. In 2024, initiatives by Milwaukee law enforcement include stepped-up patrols in high-crime areas and community engagement programs aimed at preventing youth violence. Additionally, the Milwaukee Health Department has been working on outreach programs to address the root causes of violence and provide support to affected families.
