The Apple Watch Series 10 is a great smartwatch for iPhone owners, but it’s overkill if you want to track the basics and little else. In those instances, the latest Apple Watch SE might be the better buy, especially when you can get it at a steep discount. Fortunately, Apple’s entry-level watch is available at Amazon and Best Buy in its 40mm base configuration starting at $169 ($80 off), which is $20 shy of its all-time low.
The second-gen SE can track all the essentials, allowing you to keep tabs on your daily steps, your heart rate, and your sleep quality. It offers several safety features, too, including fall/crash detection and emergency calling. It’s got Apple Pay and Family Setup for greater parental control, and if you update the wearable to watchOS 11, you can take advantage of the new Vitals app and enjoy rest days, which allows you to pause your Activity Rings when you need a reprieve. This is all powered by the same chip found in the Apple Watch Series 8, which remains snappy enough despite being a few years old.
Of course, there are some features you’ll miss out on if you buy the SE over last year’s Series 10. The latter boasts a larger, wide-angle OLED display, for example, along with a faster chip that enables Apple’s newer double tap feature. The Series 10 also lets you track more metrics with the help of temperature, EKG, and depth and water temperature sensors. But if you don’t need a bunch of advanced health and fitness features, the Apple Watch SE is a great gateway smartwatch.
$169
The latest SE borrows a few features from the Series 8, including the same chipset and Crash Detection feature, but it’s an otherwise subtle upgrade from the last-gen SE.
