Thanks to all the noise from the presidential campaigns, many may have forgotten this month also marks a very fun annual holiday. No, not Halloween — we’re talking about National Cat Day.
And we’re not kitten around. It’s an actual holiday.
According to National Cat Day’s official website, it is celebrated every Oct. 29 and was established in 2005 by Colleen Paige, an animal welfare activist who is the “founder of many other philanthropic holidays,” including National Dog Day, National Puppy Day, National Pet Day and National Wildlife Day. But it seems from the site’s “ways to celebrate” page that it’s very much about helping kitties in need, with the site asking people to adopt a cat or volunteer at a shelter or cat rescue. But it also suggests sillier ways to honor the day, like “spend the day taking photos of your cat and posting them on our Facebook page” and “commission a custom portrait painted of your cat.”
We’d like to offer another option: Simply enjoy some very funny cat tweets we’ve seen on X, formerly Twitter, or have included in our weekly “Funniest Tweets About Cats and Dogs” roundup.
So, for a few relaxing moments, forget about all the chaos sparked by the nonsensical line “They’re eating the cats” and focus more on just feline good by checking out the hilarity below.
“wow,” said the two-year-old neighbor boy petting one of our cats for the first time, “there are bones in here”

My cat: lol no
Best thing about cats is when they sit upright on a chair at the table like another little person.
— Late to the party Laura (@ericamorecambe) March 26, 2024The most maddening thing about having a cat is when you can't find them and start panicking and sweet-talk-hollering for them and shaking the treat box and nearing a panic attack — and they come yawning and stretching out of some nook or cranny like "Wow, you are being so loud."
