In Hollywood, as in any line of work, colleagues are not always going to get on like a house on fire – and there have been many occasions where co-stars have ended up in disputes.
It Ends With Us has been in the spotlight once more following reports of tension on set as leading lady Blake Lively sues her co-star and director Justin Baldoni for sexual harassment.
The film, based on the Colleen Hoover book of the same name, was released in August and saw Lively, 37, face intense criticism after claims the two leading stars were embroiled in a bitter feud.
It has since been reported Baldoni plans to countersue Lively after she submitted the 80-page lawsuit.
From small spats that eventually got sorted to all-out grudges that have prevented two stars from working together again, the world of film and TV has a long history of actors falling out while on the job.
Here, we take a look at some of the fiercest feuds Hollywood has ever seen.
Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny
Despite having incredible onscreen chemistry as Agent Dana Scully and Agent Fox Mulder in The X Files, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny’s relationship wasn’t always out of this world.
Both actors have been open about periods of time on set where the actors simply didn’t get along or even speak outside of work.
Anderson told The Guardian in 2008: ‘There were definitely periods when we hated each other. Hate is too strong a word. We didn’t talk for long periods of time.
‘It was intense, and we were both pains in the a** for the other at various times.’
Duchovny added: ‘We used to argue about nothing. We couldn’t stand the sight of each other.’
Additionally, Duchovny told Metro in the same year: ‘Familiarity breeds contempt. It’s nothing to do with the other person. All that fades away and you’re just left with the appreciation and love for the people you’ve worked with for so long.
‘We used to argue about nothing. We couldn’t stand the sight of each other.’
However, the pair have remained close friends for several decades, with Duchovny saying in 2021 that they’re like ‘family’.
Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker
Kim Cattrall had first alluded to unrest with the Sex and the City crew over money disputes in 2004 as the show finished up after six seasons.
The cast reunited to film two movies, but insiders spoke of tensions between Cattrall and her co-star Sarah Jessica Parker on set.
However, Jessica Parker long denied that there was an issue between her and Cattrall.
In October 2017, Cattrall said she and her co-stars had ‘never been friends’ and hit back at rumours that she turned down the third Sex and the City movie as she wanted more money.
She explained at the time: ‘This is really where I take to task the people from Sex and the City, and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker. I think she could’ve been nicer. I really think she could’ve been nicer. I don’t know what her issue is.’
Jessica Parker reached out to Cattrall after the death of her brother in 2018, posting her condolences on social media as well as reportedly reaching out to her in private, but Cattrall responded with her own Instagram post, raging: ‘My Mom asked me today “When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?”
‘Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your “nice girl” persona.’
The Sex and the City spin-off, And Just Like That, went on to be produced without the character of Samantha until she made a cameo in 2023.
In the same year, Jessica Parker opened up on the ‘weirdest’ part of their feud in an interview with The New Yorker: ‘It’s the weirdest thing, to be told we’re in a catfight. I would never speak poorly about Kim. I just wouldn’t.’
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford
One of the most famous feuds in Hollywood history was between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, so much so that the tension between them in one film spawned its own TV series.
The rivals famously fell out when Crawford married Franchot Tone, Davis’ leading man in Dangerous with whom she fell in love with.
Before becoming co-stars, the duo publicly slated each others’ upbringing, appearance, careers, partners, and even their children.
But when their popularities began to wane, Crawford pitched an adaptation of the hit novel What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? to Davis, with her agreeing to come aboard the project.
As filming began, however, pleasantries didn’t last long and their feud reached a fever pitch on set.
Davis reportedly sent Crawford a note telling her to ‘get off the crap’ when she sent gifts to the crew, and Crawford later urged director Robert Aldrich to use a body double for a scene where Davis’ character beats hers in fear she would hit her for real.
In a scene where Davis’ character has to drag Crawford across the floor, the actor allegedly made herself as heavy as possible for Davis, who suffered from back problems.
Aldrich said in an interview: ‘There is a way of making it easy on the actor who is doing the carrying, but Crawford wanted Bette to suffer.’
Both actors regularly called Aldrich to complain about the other, but surprisingly, they would go on to work with each other again on the 1964 film Hush… Hush Sweet Charlotte.
Bill Murray and Lucy Liu
Lucy Liu revealed on the Asian Enough podcast that she and Bill Murray got into it while filming Charlie’s Angels in 2000.
While she kept the reason behind it vague, she claimed he ‘hurled insults’ at her and ‘kept going on and on’.
She said: ‘I was, like, “Wow, he seems like he’s looking straight at me.” I couldn’t believe that [his comments] could be towards me, because what do I have to do with anything majorly important at that time?
‘I say, “I’m so sorry. Are you talking to me?” — and clearly he was, because then it started to become a one-on-one communication.’
She added: ‘It was unjust and it was uncalled for. Some of the language was inexcusable and unacceptable, and I was not going to just sit there and take it. So, yes, I stood up for myself, and I don’t regret it.’
Bill has not publicly commented on the incident but other reports have previously claimed he had also ‘loudly complained’ about Lucy’s acting on set.
Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte
Julia Roberts opened up about her I Love Trouble co-star Nick Nolte in 1993, telling The New York Times: ‘From the moment I met him we sort of gave each other a hard time, and naturally we get on each other’s nerves.’
She shared that while he could be ‘completely charming and very nice’, he was also ‘completely disgusting’, adding: ‘He’s going to hate me for saying this, but he seems to go out of his way to repel people. He’s a kick.’
The comments did not go down that well with Nolte, who later told the Los Angeles Times: ‘It’s not nice to call someone “disgusting.” But she’s not a nice person. Everyone knows that.’
In 2022 he reflected on the ‘absurd’ clash, telling Insider that they’d buried the hatchet.
When asked if he’d reached out to Roberts, he answered: ‘No, I haven’t. Though it’s buried. I mean, it was absurd what we went through.
‘It was partly my fault and a little bit of hers. Julia got married at the beginning of that film and it was one of those things where I just approached it all wrong.’
Alex Pettyfer and Channing Tatum
Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer starred together in Magic Mike, but off-set things were apparently less harmonious between them.
Pettyfer admitted that was down to him, explaining in 2015 on Bret Easton Ellis’s podcast: ‘Channing Tatum does not like me. For many reasons. Many being my own fault.’
He revealed it was because he was ‘very insecure as a human being’ while filming the stripper story, adding: ‘That gave me a bad rep because they said, “Oh Alex thinks he’s f**king better than everybody else because he doesn’t speak to anyone.”’
Things were reportedly not helped by Pettyfer renting an apartment from a friend of Tatum and allegedly moving out while still owing four months of back rent.
While Pettyfer has been open about the pair of them not getting on, Channing has never publicly addressed the alleged falling-out.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Vin Diesel
Formerly the best of friends, these Fast and Furious co-stars refused to work with each other for many years.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson spoke about the falling out with Vin Diesel in 2016, writing on Instagram: ‘There’s no other franchise that gets my blood boiling more than this one. My female costars are always amazing and I love ’em.
‘My male costars, however, are a different story. Some conduct themselves as stand-up men and true professionals, while others don’t. The ones that don’t are too chicken s**t to do anything about it anyway. Candy a**es.’
Diesel tried to extend an olive branch to Johnson to get him to sign on for the 10th movie, but Dwayne accused him of ‘manipulation’ by posting it publicly and speaking about late co-star Paul Walker to tug on his heartstrings.
But in 2023, fans were thrilled that Johnson made a cameo in Fast X as his character Luke Hobbs before returning to the franchise for a spin-off project.
Addressing their issues on Instagram, Johnson wrote at the time: ‘Despite us having our differences, me and Vin, we’ve been like brothers for years, and despite our differences, when you lead with — number one, resolve — but also you think about the future and plans that are much bigger than ourselves.
‘Those bigger plans are the buildouts. They are the North Star.’
Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy’s feud began on the set of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015 after they had an ‘aggressive’ confrontation, according to a book by Kyle Buchanan, who worked on the film.
It is thought to have been sparked by Hardy turning up to set late one day, when Theron, who was a new mum at the time was already in costume and ready to film a scene.
According to his book Blood, Sweat, and Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, which has been serialised by Vanity Fair, Theron began ‘swearing her head off’ when Hardy turned up two hours late and demanded he be fined for every minute production was held up.
Theron then insisted on having a female producer with her on set to help her feel safe, with Hardy acknowledging: ‘In hindsight, I was in over my head in many ways. The pressure on both of us was overwhelming at times.
‘What she needed was a better, perhaps more experienced partner in me, I’d like to think that now that I’m older and uglier, I could rise to that occasion.’
The pair have both spoken about the feud in the past and said it was down to the intense filming schedule and their lack of trust in one another.
Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep
Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman butted heads during the filming of Kramer vs Kramer, with the feud becoming physical.
She told The New York Times: ‘This was my first movie, and it was my first take in my first movie, and he just slapped me. And you see it in the movie. It was overstepping.’
Streep also claimed that Hoffman ‘groped her breast’ when the pair first met, though this has been refuted by a representative of hers.
At the time, Hoffman was going through a divorce while filming the movie and cited this as a possible reason for his actions on set.
He told The Huffington Post: ‘I’m sure I was acting out on her [Streep] throughout the movie. Stuff that I was feeling toward the wife that I was divorcing in real life.”
He later apologised for any misconduct toward Streep and other women during this time, saying: ‘I have the utmost respect for women and feel terrible that anything I might have done could have put her in an uncomfortable situation. I am sorry. It is not reflective of who I am.’
