‘The Monkey’ Post-Credits Teaser: What We Know About Oz Perkins’ Next Film ‘Keeper’

Writer/director Osgood “Oz” Perkins is not a genre director who is making horror franchises, so those sticking around for clues about a sequel to “The Monkey” in the film’s post-credit sequence may be disappointed. But you will catch a glimpse of what is coming next from the “Longlegs” director.

“The post-credit thing that we’re offering is a glimpse at the next movie that we actually made in between ‘Longlegs’ and ‘The Monkey,’ which is such an insane thing to say, we’ve done so much work in the last two years,” said Perkins. “This movie of ours called ‘Keeper,’ which NEON is releasing in October, and if you stick around after ‘The Monkey’ in theaters, there’s a little of teaser for that.”

“Keeper” will be Perkins and distributor NEON’s third film released in less than a 16-month span, starting with “Longlegs” coming out on July 12, 2024. According to Perkins, the inspiration behind the teaser was the early days of the James Bond franchise, where after each film MGM would tease the next 007 movie coming out the next year. As Perkins told IndieWire, he considers himself privileged with his growing relationship with NEON, where he has been able to keep quickly making movies, but each is unique.

“I’ve landed myself in a supremely lucky position where all of my movies get to be one of one, right?,” said Perkins. “I think that’s almost expected now, at least after ‘Longlegs” into ‘The Monkey.’ I think everybody’s getting, ‘Oh right, he’s not going to hit the same beat twice, I don’t know what to expect.’”

Perkins told IndieWire that ‘Keeper’ will be similar to his “zoomed out” approach to the horror genre. If “Longlegs” was his “pop version” of horror, and “The Monkey” was essentially a comedy about death, then “Keeper” will be Perkins using the genre to make a relationship film, the tagline for it being: “During an anniversary getaway at a remote cabin, a wife is left alone after her husband departs, only to confront a sinister presence that exposes the cabin’s chilling past.” The film is a smaller, more intimate project, that was born out of the restraints of the 2023 WGA and SAG strikes.

“It was made during the [Writers Guild] strike, so I couldn’t write it, this lovely Canadian non-union guy (Nick Lepard, according to IMDB) wrote this movie and we sort of figured out this thing,” said Perkins. “I was able to get Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland to kind of do a grown-up, kind of relationship horror that takes place in, more or less, one location. It’s a beautiful, beautiful movie. And Tatiana Maslany, who’s obviously in ‘The Monkey’ (Lois, the protagonist’s mother) is just the greatest. She’s so infinite. I’m so lucky to have her.”
