James Lee Williams, famously known as The Vivienne, has passed away at the age of 32. The beloved drag performer, actor, and singer, who rose to fame as the winner of the inaugural season of RuPaul's Drag Race UK in 2019, left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment.
The announcement came from their publicist, Simon Jones, who shared the news on social media, writing: "It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams,The Vivienne, has passed this weekend. James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted, and amazing person. Their family is heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother, and uncle."
A legacy beyond drag
Born in Wales and later based in Liverpool, The Vivienne's journey to stardom began as the UK Drag Ambassador to the US series RuPaul's Drag Race in 2015. Their candid discussions about overcoming drug addiction during Drag Race UK resonated with audiences, inspiring many fans to seek sobriety and embrace self-acceptance.
The Vivienne also broke barriers beyond drag. In 2023, they became the first drag performer to compete on Dancing on Ice, finishing in third place. Their theatrical pursuits included a standout performance as the Wicked Witch of the West in a UK and Ireland tour of The Wizard of Oz, a role they called "the most iconic story ever told."
In addition to their drag career, The Vivienne appeared in the critically acclaimed medical drama This Is Going to Hurt and reprised their theatrical role in the West End.
