The Weeknd made his film debut in 2019’s Uncut Gems as himself. He then went on to star in the 2023 television series, The Idol. Yet, he’s about to make his debut as the lead of new Lionsgate psychological thriller, Hurry Up Tomorrow.
Born Abel Tesfaye, the Oscar nominee will be starring alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in the Trey Edward Shults-directed film.
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, confirmed the distribution deal to Deadline. “Abel is a visionary whose art cannot be confined by any single medium,” he said. “With Hurry Up Tomorrow, in partnership with Trey, his musical universe expands onto the big screen with a psychological thriller that will usher in a new cinematic experience for fans. We are thrilled to be bringing it to audiences worldwide.”
News of the film first surfaced last year and at the time it was untitled and based on an idea from Tesfaye. Shults co-wrote the film with the artist.
Despite both Ortega and Keoghan being extensively booked, they “made it clear they wanted this as their next project.” Shults is best known for directing Waves and It Comes at Night.
The cinematic release is “an extension of the anticipated album of the same title,” which is also the “culmination” of The Weeknd’s trilogy with After Hours and Dawn FM. The soundtrack will accompany the film’s score, created by The Weeknd and Daniel Lopatin. A release date for the film and soundtrack have yet to be announced.
