This new Apple product could be the sleeper hit of 2025

Apple’s AirTag item tracker has been a huge hit since it was first released in April 2021. Look around, and you’ll see the circular accessory attached to keys, backpacks, and suitcases everywhere.

This year, Apple will release AirTag 2 – its first-ever hardware upgrade to the product. I think it has the potential to be an under-the-radar success.

What to expect from AirTag 2

If you haven’t been following along, here’s a refresher on what to expect from AirTag 2:

AirTag 2 is expected to be released this year, according to sources including Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg.

The key upgrade

One of the things I’m most hopeful about is that AirTag 2 offers serious improvements to Precision Finding. This feature is designed to show you exactly where a lost AirTag is located using a combination of Bluetooth and the Ultrawide Wideband chip. In practice, the Precision Finding feature is rather finicky and only works in ideal conditions.

Based on reporting from Bloomberg, it sounds like my wish will come true. Currently, the Precision Finding feature works from around 10 to 30 meters away. AirTag 2 will feature a next-generation Ultra Wideband chip with triple the range for Precision Finding. This means the feature should work between 30 and 90 meters away. In fact, we’ve already seen the upgraded Ultra Wideband chip in the real-world thanks to the iPhone 15.

This will be a huge upgrade to usability. Currently, the easiest way to locate something is to play a sound through the AirTag speaker. This can lead you in the general direction of the AirTag, but more powerful Precision finding will lead to the exact location.

Wrap up

AirTag doesn’t attract headlines and attention as often as the next flagship iPhone upgrade. But that’s because is it has a purpose, and it serves that purpose extraordinarily well. Almost everyone I talk to has a story to share about AirTags saving the day when they lost a suitcase or backpack. I also hear from a lot of people who lose something without an AirTag attached and then immediately buy an AirTag so that never happens again.
