Brooklyn-based performer and musician – as well as Drag Race season eight standout – Thorgy Thor is currently delighting audiences across the country on her Thorgy Does Christmas! tour. Promising a spirited evening of music, laughs and holiday cheer, this must-see show is running through December 23, hopefully in a city near you.
We had the chance to chat with Thorgy about the new tour and unleashed our burning questions in the Socialite Seven. Who inspires her? What drives her crazy? She answers these and offers some sage advice right here!
Who has had the biggest influence on your career and why?
You know what? I'm just going to say what comes out of my head first. I'm going to say Gilda Radner from SNL back in the day…even the way you reacted to me saying her name, that's how everyone reacts to her. When I discovered her I was like this woman is a brilliant, improvisational comedian. She's bold. She's fearless but what made her so funny is how serious she was about it. She was so serious about her craft. She was always an inspiration to me, to be honest, as an entertainer, as a comedian, I'm like what would Gilda do?
What is your biggest pet peeve?
Bad breath…and people that don't know. Also, I'm totally that person who goes, you’ve got to brush your teeth. If I have to stand here, I'm not holding my breath. I want to talk to you. Get it together. I'm really, really, really sensitive to smells, so when somebody doesn't know, I'm like, you’ve got to fix it.
I have a lot of pet peeves. I'm also ADHD, so I fixate on things. If a faucet is tapping, I can't even talk to you. I can't understand what you're saying at all. Yeah. Just smelling nice, smelling nice. And you know what? You meet a lot of people in this industry because I do a lot of meet and greets and I meet a lot of people in person. I give a lot of hugs. I talk very close and it's not just some of the fans that don't smell so fresh, but it is the queens as well. Wash your clothes, girls!
If you wrote your autobiography, what would the title be?
Oh my God, you're putting me on the spot with creative answers right now. I've never been asked that question…a title of my book. “Thorgy Thor, Don't Touch Me”. I don't know.
If you could wake up in the morning with a superpower or talent you don't already have, what would it be?
Mind reading. I would love to be talking to somebody and actually…although I like asking the questions and getting down to the point, I'm really good with people and getting down to it, but it would skip a lot of steps if I could just be like, oh, I know exactly what you're thinking. I’d know exactly what to say to get what I want.
What are three things you can't live without?
Tomato juice, the Tchaikovsky playlist on my Spotify and my Comme des Garçons studded leather jacket. It’s vintage. Don't steal that. It's my favorite thing in my closet.
What are you most grateful for?
Pickles. No. What am I most grateful for? I'm grateful to come from a very loving family. My father is my soul. I love him. I talk to him every day. And you know, as a queer person, I talk to a lot of other queer people, especially in the drag industry. A lot of people don't have great relationships with their fathers. It's very, very common. And I do, I'm very grateful for my father. I love him. I'm probably gonna call him when we're done and say hello. I love him. I talk to him every day.
He has always been such a cheerleader for me. And you know, whenever he found out I was doing something new, he was like, “Oh, cool. Well, just be careful if you're walking around in high heels in New York City”. He always rolled with it and he always told me from when I was very, very young, “I love you no matter what you do. And I will always be here for you.” And he is still there. I'm very, very lucky.
What is the best piece of advice you've been given?
How about this? Surround yourself with people that are smarter than you and also surround yourself with a tight group of people that make you feel smart and amazing and support you.
When you walk in the room, they're happy to see you. They lift you up. And if you notice that those people are not those people, there are more people. Get rid of them and find new people because there's always a group of people and you deserve to feel your best. So, surround yourself with a tight knit group of people that support you creatively, artistically, financially, and they love you for you.
