Three-Player Trade Projection Would Send Padres $14 Million Star To AL Contender

The San Diego Padres are reportedly listening to trade offers for a plethora of their star players in an attempt to shed a bit of payroll to make room to spend money elsewhere.

One of the players being heavily rumored to be on the trade block is first baseman Luis Arraez. The left-handed hitter has a career batting average of .323.

One team that could use a high average, low strikeout hitter is the Seattle Mariners. Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer recently suggested the Mariners would be the best fit for Arraez, even pitching a trade package that would send the lefty to Seattle.

Here's the deal pitched by Rymer which would send Arraez to the Mariners:

  • Seattle Mariners receive: 1B Luis Arraez
  • San Diego Padres receive: DH Mitch Garver, INF Michael Arroyo (No. 12 prospect)

"Hence the Mariners, who you may have heard aren't very good at hitting the ball," Rymer wrote. "But just in case, know that Seattle hitters have ranked in the bottom five of the American League for strikeouts in each of the last six seasons. And right now, it so happens they have an opening at first base.

"With their payroll potentially already maxed out, a cash-neutral deal would suit Seattle best. That could also work for the Padres, though probably only if they're able to use such a deal to effectively buy a prospect from the talent-rich Mariners."

Arraez would be a huge pickup for Seattle. He hits for a high average and almost never strikes out.

Garver has been above above-average catcher for most of his career, but he's 33 years old, so his prime years are likely behind him. Arroyo is a very talented infield prospect who's coming off an excellent 2024 campaign.

This deal makes sense for both sides and it would be the dream for the Mariners.
