It has been 30 years since Sister, Sister first aired but Tia Mowry still has some never-before-heard secrets from the set of the hit show.
When Mowry joined us in the SheKnows studio, we invited her to take a walk down memory lane in our “What’s in my Box” series, leading her to reflect on launching her acting career with twin sister Tamera at just 16 years old.
“We knew at the time that something like this doesn’t happen all the time,” she tells us. “I mean, it’s like a once in a lifetime situation [to] come to LA and then you end up booking not only a television show, but your own television show. And we didn’t have a lot of experience.”
With the show came a lot of changes, some smaller than others. But Mowry let us know a little-known secret about the early days on the show. “My sister’s hair was thicker than mine, and they wanted us to look and be exactly alike so they put extensions in my hair,” she reveals. “Also, they added a mole on me.”
As for the bigger changes, becoming a household name as a teenager definitely wasn’t easy on Mowry or her sister. “Not everybody’s nice,” she reflects.
“My sister and I, we still had to go to school and high school that was challenging for many reasons, and I think one in particular was dealing with bullies,” she says. “But what was awesome was we had each other.”
90s kids who watched Tia and Tamera on Sister, Sister, likely also remember their hit movie Twitches, another project Mowry looks back on fondly.
“You know, what’s so crazy I have seen on Instagram where people have tattooed these symbols from the movie on parts of their body. I was like, ‘geez,’ this movie definitely had an impact on you,” she jokes. “I will say this. This was such a fun movie to shoot.”
Watch the rest of Mowry’s “What’s in my Box” video to see her reflect more on Twitches, her kids, life after her divorce and her reality show My Next Act.
