While Tim Walz and his story might’ve been something only Minnesotans knew until recently, the Democratic Vice Presidential candidate has been all over the US sharing his passions and goals in the past few months as Vice President Kamala Harris‘ running mate. And, as the country continues to get to know him ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential elections, his wife Gwen Walz recently shared some heart-warming details of their love story.
As it turns out, Tim and Gwen first met when they were teachers together in the same high school. As she pointed out, it was Gwen’s sister who first took note of her coworker.

“My sister came out and stayed with me during the January term and she saw him teach and she said to me, ‘Gwen, do you know Tim Walz?’ and I said ‘I think I know who he is,'” Gwen remembered in an interview with Katie Couric. “I saw him teach and I’m going to tell you he’s the best teacher I’ve ever seen,” Gwen said her sister told her. “I think you should meet him.”
“She even made some predictions,” Gwen added.
Fast-forward some time later, Gwen and Tim ended up having to share a choir room with a divider in the middle to teach their kids. “He taught on one side and I taught on the other,” she said. “That was a way to get to know one another.” Is it just us or doesn’t that sound like a rom-com storyline?
After getting to know each other, the pair went on their first date.

“He asked if he could kiss me goodnight and I said ‘no,’ that I don’t ever kiss on a first date, ‘English teachers have policies,'” Gwen remembered. “And he looked at me like ‘Aren’t you in your mid-20s and this is your policy?’ and then he said ‘Well, all right then, because I’m gonna marry you. Now, get out of my car.'” Talk about a mic-drop moment!
“And then he didn’t call me for three days,” Gwen added.
Luckily though, Tim eventually did call and they’ve been together ever since! In 1994, they got married and have since welcomed their kids, daughter Hope and son Gus.
