Stains on toilet seats are often blamed on urine, but the cause is typically limescale or harsh cleaning chemicals you are using, like bleach.
Despite appearing smooth, toilet surfaces harbour minute pores that can harbour dirt, limescale, and bacteria, making them look dreadful and creating an unhygienic environment.
While it might be instinctive to grab bleach for cleaning a toilet, this can be too aggressive, leading to the toilet seat turning yellow, cracking, and possibly irritating skin.
Rebecca Cliffe took to the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook page to share how she tackled her yellow, almost orange-stained toilet seat.
She claimed that a 2p coin was all that was needed to tackle the chore. Rebecca wrote: “The 2p to scrape it off with a little water. Took no more than 30 seconds. I’ve got the kids' loo to tackle at some point but too tired tonight.

“I’m so glad I found this site. I’ve tried all sorts of chemicals on it before, and it wouldn’t budge - thanks, Hinchers.”
She accompanied the post with a before and after picture. The toilet seat in the second photo looked brand new.
Taking to the comments section Mrs Hinch fans claimed this cleaning tip was “genius” and were surprised at how well it worked.

Some users recommended those with limescale-ridden taps use this cleaning hack too. Amanda Walker said: “A wet 2p scrapes limescale off taps too.”
Helen McDowell wrote: “I got the rubber gloves out and 2p coin on the toilet as I had massive build up around the toilet seat and rim and nothing was shifting it until I used this. Also, did the taps amazing.”
Sharon Hunt commented: “I tried this out the other day on my toilet seat and taps and both looked incredible after.”
One cleaning fan recommended the use of a magic eraser to remove toilet seat stains, however, Rebecca found one problem with that.
Aileen Leckie said: “I use Flash Magic Erasers and it takes it off in no time. Just damp and rub over the toilet seat.”
Rebecca replied: “Great idea, but ours was quite thick though and was way beyond that. I will definitely be using your tip going forward though to avoid the same thing happening again.”
