Singer Tom Grennan says landing the festive number one spot would be an “amazing” Christmas present - as only 3,000 separate the top three.
The singer’s track - It Can’t Be Christmas - is vying for Number One alongside Wham’s Last Christmas and Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas in the closest race for years.
He told the Mirror: “The reaction has been brilliant – I can’t help getting excited now to be honest.
"It’s just great being in the mix with all those other megastar names that you think of as a part of Christmas, Wham!, Mariah Carey, Band Aid, but then when you find out there are literally only a few thousands sales between them all you start thinking actually I’d love to get to the top spot.”
He added: “It’s something you grow up hearing about isn’t it, the Christmas number one, it would be an amazing Christmas present to land one – I can only cross my fingers now really and hope people keep playing and downloading it, but I’ve got a bit carried away already and got myself a new tattoo on my leg just in the hope we get there.”
Currently there is a blank space on his leg where his name could be etched if he is successful.
Tom says: “The weird thing is I actually wrote this song in the middle of summer so it didn’t quite feel real until you suddenly start seeing decorations and hearing Christmas songs – and now we’re here.”
The winner of the race will be announced on Friday. Last Christmas famously missed out on the Christmas top spot in 1984, then peaking at Number 2 behind Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas?
It eventually claimed their long-awaited number one slot last year after 39 years. Frontman George Michael passed away on Christmas Day in 2016. Mariah has never claimed the top spot before with her famous festive song.
